Interview with ATB

If you live in Europe, especially the eastern part, you've heard of ATB. His debut album "Movin' Melodies" produced a massive hit single with "9PM (Til I Come)." The song, with its haunting guitar line, ranks among the more memorable riffs in recent pop music. The song hit No. 1 on the U.K. pop charts, where it stayed for weeks and sold more than a million copies in England alone. That album also produced two other Top 10 singles and caught attention in other countries, making ATB the best selling European trance artist in North America.

His new album "Dedicated" (Radikal) may attract similar attention.

"I don't like the hardcore dance thing, so the important thing with my music is melody. We do a different kind of music, but it's still music and you need melody. I try to be very melodic. I want my album to be listened to in the car and home, not just in the clubs. When I produce an album, I want people to listen to it all of the time."

One thing is for sure: People are bound to listen once they hear the soulful voice of Roberta Carter Harrison, especially on "Hold You," which found a home on the European charts.

"She has an awesome voice," ATB says. "I really love it. The first moment I heard her, I knew I had to work with her. We mix well together. I think we help build each other. We're better when we work together. When she writes or sings, she does it in the same style as me. We really understand each other musically."

The critics seem to have mixed reactions about "Dedicated." ATB hasn't noticed.

"Some think it is, some don't," he says with a laugh. "Some people like 'Two Worlds' better. Some people like 'Melodies.' For me personally, I'm very hard on myself. When I hear my music, I think it always could have been better. You have to learn. It's the only way to grow."

As for touring, ATB says he's different than most DJs.
